Military career throughout and rose to rank of lieutenant-colonel. Stood for Parliament against the candidates of Campbell, Archibald (London) 1 and won seat for Anstruther Easter Burghts (1741). One of group of Scottish members known as the Duke of Argyll's gang, voted against Hanoverians. Did not stand a second time for parliament but remained in service of the States-General. Returned to Scotland and died 1796.
