Graduated from King's College, Aberdeen (1691). Worked as ship's surgeon (1701-1707). Lived briefly in Ireland and London before studying medicine at Leiden. Graduated (1711), served British army in Flanders and set up a medical practice in London (1712). Elected to the Royal Society (1714). Named first physician to the Westminster Hospital (1719). Licentiate of the Royal College of Physicians of London (1720). Physician-in-ordinary to Queen Caroline (1726). Co-founded St George's Hospital (1733).
