Made lieutenant-colonel but given leave to sit in Parliament. Elected MP for Wigtownshire (1710) at the behest of the Earl of Stair. Unseated 1711 due to dispute from opponent. Elected MP for Wigtown Burghs (1715) voting consistently with the Whig Administrations. Died 1733.
