Educated at St Andrews, receiving MA in 1613. Taught philosophy until 1619 then moved to Keith, Banffshire wheree he became minister of the parish until 1624. On 27 October 1624 Baron was translated to the parish of Greyfiars, Aberdeen until 1631 Affected by ill health, Baron was relieved of his preaching duties and became the first professor of divinity at Marischal College, Aberdeen on 21 December 1625, where he subsequently received his doctorate in 1627. Baron published theological works including Philosophia theologiae ancillans in 1621. As a strong resister to the national covenant he made took the decision to migrate to London and set sail on 28 March 1639. He died en route at Berwick.
