Took MA at the University of Edinburgh at age 14. Began his career in Scotland, first as minister of Saltoun, East Lothian (1665-1669) and then as Professor of Divinity at the University of Glasgow (1669-1674). In London (1674-1685), but fled to Dutch Republic to escape charges of treason for anti-Catholic agitation. Returned to England with William and Mary (1688), and became Bishop of Salisbury, 1689. Wrote 'History of the Restoration' and 'History of His Own Time'.
Burnet's wife, Margaret (born in Scotland), did not join him in England until the 1680s.
