7th Earl of Argyll, nicknamed ‘Gruamach’ (the Grim). Successful soldier and politician in Scotland prior to 1603. Lived intermittently at court throughout 1600s and 1610s between campaigns in Scotland. Naturalized (1610). Upon second marriage (1610),control of his estates in Scotland fell to his son. A favourite of James VI, but fell from favour in 1618 and travelled to the continent, where he announced his conversion to Roman Catholicism and took up service in the Spanish army in Flanders. Declared traitor (1619). Remained out of favour with James VI, but reconciled with Charles I and returned to live in Drury Lane (1627). Gave up all remaining influence over his estates, retaining only his title (1631).
