Wealthy Glasgow merchant who was a commissioner for the Union of Scotland and England (1706). Sat in first Parliament of Great Britain. Elected, unopposed, to Glasgow Burghs (1716) consistently voted with the Government. Re-elected in 1722 but lost popularity in Glasgow due to a rumour that he was responsible for a tightening up of the local customs service - proved false but was defeated at the next election. Gained a seat in the Commons on a technicality. Died 1753.
