Educated at Westminster (1743-6) and Christ Church, Oxford (1747). Called to the bar (1754). Initially elected MP for Ayr Burghs but quickly brought in to fill seat of Glasgow Burghs when brother forced to step down (1761). Active in parliament as a Government speaker. Supported the Bute Administration then attached himself to the Bedford party. Political career ended legal career. Appointed lord clerk register (1768), voting consistently with the Administration. Also MP for Argyllshire (1780-99). Died 1816.
