Earl of Ilay (1716) and 3rd duke of Argyll (1743). Representative peer in the House of Lords (1707-1713, 1715-1761). Dominated Scottish affairs after the union, and carefully managed Scots MPs and peers for the Whig and, later, Walpolean interest.
