Licensed in the Church of Scotland (1671), but converted to Catholicism when travelling in Rome (1670s). Employed as a teacher in the presbytery of St Andrews (1681), where he petitioned to re-joined the Kirk. Re-admitted (1682), and appointed minister of Selkirk (1685). Left his charge following accusations of Jacobite sympathy (1689). Vicar of Abingdon St Helens (1692) and a prebendary of Salisbury cathedral (1693).
