Send to London, with eldest brother Coutts, Patrick, to work in father's import/export business in Jeffreys Square, City of London. 1761 joined his elder brother Coutts, James (London) 1 at a banking house in the Strand - founded by John Campbell. Brother James married Campbell's granddaughter and inherited the bank, naming it James and Thomas Coutts. Aristocracy among customers of Coutts but greatest pride was in royal patronage. Died at 1 Stratton Street, Piccadilly, London 1822. Nephew of Coutts, James (London).
