Son of wealthy merchant who made a prosperous match was adopted by the Ayrshire opposition Whigs as an anti-Walpole candidate. Sat for Ayrshire between 1741-54, voting against the Government. Also elected as MP for Renfrewshire 1761-68. Died 1778.
