Attended Westminster school as a boy, from where he was elected to Trinity College (1614). Graduated BA (1618), Fellow (1619) and MA (1621). Regis Professor of Greek (1625-1639) and orator of Cambridge University (1627-1639). MA at Oxford (1628). Prebendary of Lincoln Cathedral (1632). Treasurer of Wells (1633). Also acquired archdeanory of Stowe (1641), rectory of Huggate (1641), deanery of St Buyran (1642) and vicarage of Greenwich (1642). Royalist during the civil wars, and retired to Oxford (1645), where he served as king's chaplain. Escaped to the continent during the Commonwealth, and remained attached to Charles II's court-in-exile. Upon the Restoration, installed as dean of Wells (1660). Received benifices of Uplowman (1664) and Cheddar (1665). Preached often before the court and parliament. Received naturalization (1663), and elected bishop of Wells (1670). Died at Wells (1672).
