Through father-in-law's influence entered faculty of advocates before he had even studied law. Went to Holland to do so and returned to Scotland in 1696. Practised law upon return and could count many court magnates as his clients. Obtained captain's commission in a Scottish regiment (1702-4). Frequently travelled to the Netherlands in various capacities. Elected to Parliament as MP for Aberdeenshire in by-election of 1709. Entered at Middle Temple, 12 May 1716. Member of the informal 'steering committee' of Scottish episcopalian MPs. Enjoyed a long, politically active career dying in 1725.
