Knighted 1609; married wife at St Mary Woolnoth, London. Appointed gentleman of the bedchamber. Continued post under Charles I with additional appointment of master of the household. Admitted to Scottish Privy Council (1631). Created Viscount Belhaven (1633). Signed the 'king's covenant' (1638). Returned to Edinburgh where he died in 1639.
