MP for Roxburghshire (1715-22, 1727-34, 1742-7) on father's interest but transferred to seat as MP for Dumfries Burghs (1722-27) on Queensbury-Annandale interests. Member of the 'Duke of Argyll's gang' voted with the Opposition in all three divisions on the Hanoverians. Died 1748.
