Second son of James Sutherland who changed his surname upon marriage. Family's finances were in dire straits though Dunbar improved them somewhat through marriage. Generally supported Union. Initially did not want to stand for parliament but attitude changed in 1710 and he pursued a seat. MP for Caithness (1710-13). Voted with the Tories. Did not stand again in 1713. Maintained low profile during 1715 rising and there is little record of Dunbar until his death in 1724.
