Apprenticed to Baillie John Dingwall of Aberdeen but found local trade of little challenge. Moved to London where he was employed as an ‘out-door clerk’ in the bank of Boldero & Co. By 1759 became junior partner in the bank of Roffey, Neale, James and Fordyce, becoming managing partner sometime after 1768. Accumulated vast wealth, though Fordyce lost heavily in the 1771-2 stock market. Fled London with partners declaring bankruptcy. Caused one of the worst financial crises in London (since 1720). Fordyce returned to London where he died at George Street, Portman Square in 1789. Brother of Fordyce, David, Fordyce, James (London) and Fordyce, William
