Elected MP for Lanarkshire with support of Duke and dowager Duchess of Hamilton. Would have been considered an episcopal Tory. Relatively inactive in Parliament, political connections were Jacobite. Re-elected in 1713 but chose not to stand again in 1715. Returned to Parliament in 1735, again for Lanarkshire. Swore allegiance to George I (1714), sympathies remained Jacobite - though remained inactive in 1715 and 1745. Died 1750.
