Earl of Lanark (1639) and 2nd duke of Hamilton (1649). Moved to London and lodged with his brother, 3rd marquess of Hamilton (c.1636). Appointed secretary of state for Scotland (1640). Accompanied Hamilton to Scotland (1642), but fled to avoid taking Solemn League and Covenant (1643). Arrested (1643), but escaped and submitted to Covenanters. Led negotiation of 'Engagement', and participated in invasion of England (1647-1648). Fled to exile in Dutch Republic after battle of Preston (1648). Returned to Scotland with Charles II (1650). Participated in invasion of England, and killed as a result of battle of Worcester (1651).
