Fourth Marquess of Tweeddale. Appointed extraordinary lord of session (1721), a post he held until his death. Elected one of sixteen representative peers to sit in the Lords for Scotland (1722). Left political scene in 1734 and concentrated on estates at Yester, though seems to have remained residence in England. Appointed secretary of state for Scotland and keeper of the signet (1742). Continued to be elected a representative peer (1747, 1754 and 1761) but had not real power or influence and had little role in active politics. He died in London in 1762 and was buried at Yester..
