Twin brother of Hugh, Lord Polwarth. Educated at a private school in London (1716-1720s). Called to the bar 1731. Solicitor-general to the Prince of Wales (1741-46). MP for Berwickshire 1734-41 and again 1742-60 as an anti-Walpole Whig. 1740s voted both for, and against, the Government. Dismissed from Parliament for attacking Lord Tweeddale (1746?). Began to attend the House again in 1750. Died 1760.
