1727-1783. Moved to London (1751) in search of opportunities for employment in the empire. Joined army, serving in Canada and New York. Bought Baccaye estate, Grenada (1764). Elected to Grenadian House of Representatives, but quarreled with governor. Dismissed from his army command for mutiny. Selected to present (unsuccessful) petition against governor of Grenada to Privy Council in London, later 1760s. Stood unsuccessfully as MP for Wooton-Bassett, Wiltshire (1768).
