1730-1784. Joined the navy (1743) and served in West Indies, Lisbon, Cape Verde Islands and Cape of Good Hope. Governor of West Florida (1764-1766), after which he moved to London. Stood unsuccessfully as MP for Carlisle (1768), but elected successively for Cockermouth, Appleby, Lostwithiel and Ilchester (1768-1787). Part of British Peace Commission to North America (1778.
