1739-1788. Joined navy as a young man, and served in West Indies. Discharged, and joined East India Company, serving in Murshidabad and Benares. Also lived for a time in Basra, Mauritius and Cape of Good Hope. Re-joined the navy (1780), and was stationed successively at Liverpool, Nantucket and New York. Lived in London following discharge.
