Fourth marquess of Lothian and Earl of Ancram. Made lieutenant-colonel of 11th Dragoons (1745) and fought at Culloden. Given command of 25th Regiment of Foot (1747) and continued to be promoted through the army ranks. Elected MP for Richmond in 1747 holding position until 1763. Chosen one of the sixteen representative peers in Scotland (1768) and invested a knight of the Thistle at St James's Palace. Died at Bath in 1775.
