17th Earl of Crawford and 1st Earl of Lindsay. Prolific parliamentary career throughout 1630s. November 1641 commission to travel to London to discuss the Irish rising with the English Parliament and act as peacemakers between the king and the English Parliament. Returned to Scotland by 1642. Participated in Royalist battles and was involved in various engagements. Deprived of his offices during Cromwell's era. Taken prisoner at estates of Alyth (August 1654). Initially imprisoned in Tower of London, transferred to Sandown Castle and then to Windsor Castle where he remained until his release in 1660. Returned to Scotland. Withdrew from public life in 1662-3.
