First earl of Callendar. Joined Covenanter army though there is suggestion that he was also involved in the royalist cause (had secret meetings with Charles I whilst he was prisoner at Newcastle in 1646). Initially patrolled Scottish borders with his forces but marched into England in June 1644 to reassert Scottish military control in the North East. Joined siege of Newcastle. Chose to remain in England rather than returning to Scotland, though finally returned in 1646. Returned to England for military purposed in 1648. Travelled to London in 1655 and was successfully restored to his lands. Died at Callendar House in 1647 and was buried at Falkirk.
