Became a king's scholar at Westminster School (1760) and elected to a studentship at Christ Church, Oxford (1764). Graduated BA (1768) and MA in 1772. Entered Lincoln's Inn (1765) and called to the bar (1770). Maintained a moderate, private practice. Made attorney-general, and knighted June 1788. Elected to House of Commons for borough of Hindon, Wiltshire (1777). Followed politics of his father-in-law. Died at his home in Duke Street, Westminster (1826) and buried at Kensington Church.
