Educated in Glasgow and Leiden, called to the bar 1731. MP for Linlithgow Burghs (1742-47) One of the Duke of Argyll's gang, voting with the Opposition. Switched to seat in Kirkcudbright Stewartry (1747-68) with support of the Duke of Queensbury and Lord Selkirk, as well as Andrew Fletcher. Subsequently attached himself to Lord Bute, acted as private secretary. Died 1797.
