Initially stood for Parliament in 1708 but three-way contest, with seat going to Cunningham, Henry. Stood again in 1710, with backing of the Duke of Hamilton and endorsed by the Earl of Mar. Elected as a Tory MP for Stirlingshire. Re-elected on interests of Lord Linlithgow and Lord Mar. Withdrew from 1715 election, spending following years as a Jacobite agent. Died 1777.
