First Earl of Rosebery. Travelled abroad in youth, served in imperial army of Hungary, returning to Scotland in 1687. Appointed Gentleman of the Bedchamber to Prince George of Denmark. Represented Edinburgh in Scottish Parliament (1695). In recognition of support for government created Viscount Rosebery (1700) and Earl of Rosebery by Queen Anne in 1703. Sworn of the privy council (1702). One of commissioners of the Union with England. Died 1723.
