Graduated from University of Glasgow where he improved upon the design for the Newcomen engine (1757). Migrated to London in search of preferment. Retained as a tutor for the son of Admiral Sir Charles Knowles, with whom he sailed to Quebec in 1759. Returned to England in the early 1760s, sick of a life at sea and unable to secure remuneration from Edward Knowles, moved back to Glasgow in 1763. Remained active in the sciences, publishing a number of works. Died at Edinburgh (1805).
