Earl of Forth, as well as earl of Bentford. Initially entered Swedish army. Sent to England on diplomatic mission (1634). Appointed governor of Edinburgh Castle (1639) but on being denied entrance settled in Newcastle upon Tyne. At outbreak of the civil wars, joined the king at Shrewsbury and appointed marshal-general of the cavalier army. Following battle of Edgehill, royalists, Ruthven included, retired to Oxford. Received a head wound during the siege of Gloucester. Rejoined king but again wounded at second battle of Newbury (1644) and left at Donnington Castle. Appointed chamberlain to the prince of Wales and accompanied him into exile in France. 1650 accompanied Charles II to Scotland though his name was included on a list of individuals prohibited from entering the country. Took up residence at Perth but died at Dundee (1651)
