Presented to vicarage of Calder-Cleres (1594). Accompanied Duke of Lennox on diplomatic mission to France (1601). Accompanied James VI on his journey to London following the union of the crowns (1603). Archbishop of Glasgow (1603) and St Andrews (1615). Chancellor of Scotland (1635). Forced into exile (1638) following Covenanting Revolution. Made his will at Newcastle (1639), and died in London shortly thereafter.
