Graduated from the University of Edinburgh and continued studies inGlasgow. Migrated to Wooler, Northumberland 1752, appointed physician to Bamburgh Infirmary - noted for care of poor. Moved to Well Close Square, Whitechapel (1777) and appointed physician to Eastern Medical Dispensary in Great Alie Street. At the time of his death Turnbull had nearly completed a practical system of medicine, volume 1 of which was published posthumously as 'The Medical Works Containing a Popular Treatise on Health and the Means of Preserving it' (1805)
