Called to the bar in 1738. Solicitor-general (Scotland, 1742-46), Lord Advocate (1754-60), Lord President of Court of Session (1760-87). Raised as an anti-Walpole Whig by his father Dundas, Robert. Successful lawyer who initially spurned politics. Only entered political scene after his father's death, standing as MP for Edinburghshire. Violently anti-Jacobite, had many critics - though supported Newcastle. Died 1787.
