Called to the bar 1709. Solicitor-general (Scotland, 1717-20), Lord Advocate (1720-25). Lord of Session (1737-53) and Lord President (1748-53), both as Lord Arniston. Posts received under patronage of the Duke of Roxburghe, head of the Squadrone. Elected MP for Edinburghshire, securing the Jacobite vote. Voted with the opposition. On acceptance of a judgeship (1737) Dundas left politics. Deemed one of the greatest lawyers in Scotland during the 18th century, Dundas died in 1753.
