2nd earl and only duke of Lauderdale. Prominent in Covenanter diplomacy with England during the 1640s. Exiled to Dutch Republic (1648), but returned to Scotland and was captured following battle of Worcester (1651). Imprisoned in Tower of London throughout 1650s. Appointed Secretary of State for Scotland by Charles II (1661), and increasingly dominated Scottish affairs from London. Part of the 'Cabal' ministry, 1668-1673. Commissioner to the Scottish Parliament, 1669-1679
