Born in Aberdeen in 1659, the son of Gilbert Molleson and Margaret Smith. Margaret was an early convert to Quakerism in Aberdeen, while her husband was a merchant who served on the town council and persecuted Quakers. Gilbert was made a freeman of the Drapers Company in London by 1690. Brother-in-law of Robert Barclay, the Apologist.
