Born in Aberdeen in 1659, the son of Gilbert Molleson and Margaret Smith. Margaret was an early convert to Quakerism in Aberdeen, while her husband was a merchant who served on the town council and persecuted Quakers. Gilbert was made a freeman of the Drapers Company in London by 1690. Brother-in-law of Robert Barclay, the Apologist. Identified as a trustee and one of the 'correspondents inhabiting at London for the services of the truth in Scotland' in Elizabeth Dickson's 1701 bequest. Took as apprentices fellow Scots Falconer, Gilbert and Falconer, Jane.
