Joined Middleton, George as a partner in his bank in the Strand, which he inherited in 1760 through his wife, a granddaughter of Campbell, John (London) 3. He ran it alongside his brother, Coutts, Thomas (London), styling it James and Thomas Coutts. Appointed MP for Edinburgh (1762), but forced to stand down (1767). Later had a mental breakdown and relinquished control of the bank to his brother. Nephew of Coutts, James (London) and brother of Coutts, Patrick.
