Joined Campbell, John (London) 3 at his bank in the Strand, becoming partner (1708) and taking over the bank upon Campbell's death (1712). His bank was known as a Whig establishment, and prospered under the patronage of London-Scots, especially the Argyll brothers Campbell, John (London) and Campbell, Archibald (London) 1. Invested in schemes of Law, John, and suffered severe losses when they collapsed. Suffered also when the South Sea Bubble burst. Re-build his business with the help of Scottish patrons. Took on Coutts, James (London) 1 as a partner (1755), who ultimately inherited the bank through his marriage to a niece of Mary Campbell's brother. Master of the Royal Scottish Corporation (1725-1726), to which he donated £35 7s 6d.
