Born in Aberdeen in 1659, he was made a freeman of the Drapers Company in London by 1690. Brother-in-law of Robert Barclay, the Apologist. Identified as a trustee and one of the 'correspondents inhabiting at London for the services of the truth in Scotland' in Elizabeth Dickson's 1701 bequest.
