Son of Sutherland, William. At insistence of grandfather stood for Sutherland in 1727, winning the seat. Succeeded as the Earl of Sutherland (1733). Made a representative peer (1734-47). Seems to have have preferred to leave near the court. Died at Montauban, France in 1750.
