Son of Young, Peter, and brother of Young, John. Graduated MA from St Andrews, 1603. Accompanied his father south with James VI (1603). Librarian to bishop of Chester (1603). Incorporated at Oxford (1605), where he was chaplain at All Souls College. Under patronage of bishop of Bath and Wells, appointed secretary to the king, as well as royal librarian. Undertook substantial reorganisation of royal library, including construction of a new building at St James's Place (1609-1610), and greatly enhanced its collection. Received various honours: preband of Chester Cathedral (1613), burgess of Dundee (1618), rector of Llanynys (1620), preband and treasurer of St Paul's (1621) and rector of Hayes (1623). Latin secretary to Bishop John Williams (1624). Known also as a Greek scholar. Deprived (1649), and retired until his death to the house of his son-in-law, John Atwood, in Broomfield, Essex.
