Attended St Andrews University, graduating MA (1606), and subsequently elected fellow of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge (1606). Ordained a priest (1610), and received BD (1611) and DD (1613). Enjoyed considerable preferment, possibly due to familial connections at court through his father, Young, Peter, and brother, Young, Patrick, and appointed successively chancellor of Wells Cathedral (1611), canon of York (1613), dean of Winchester (1616) and rector of Over Wallop (1620). Also a royal chaplain. Served James VI and I in a variety of clerical/diplomatic roles. Apparently did not enjoy similar preferment from Charles I, and repeatedly disappointed in his desire for a bishopric.
