Principle keeper of the signet (1705-7), Lord of Session (1707-34). Strict Presbyterian. Did not take part in the Fifteen Rebellion, led by his brother Erskine, John (London) 1. Allied himself with Campbell, Archibald (London) 1, placing the Erskine interest as his disposal. Became dissatisfied, however, with Ilay 1732. Resigned judgeship and and returned for Clackmannanshire (1734-41). Appointed by the Prince of Wales as his secretary for Scotland. Admitted to Inner Temple, 13 May 1742. Involvement in negotiations with the Pretender for restoration of the Stuarts (1739). MP for Stirling Burghs (1741-7). After the collapse of the Forty-Five, Erskine went over to the Government, voting for the Hanoverians in 1746. Died 1754.
