Twenty-second, or sixth, Earl of Mar. Took seat in Scottish Parliament in 1696. Considered a proper court politician. Rise at court began when he joined the first commission for negotiation between England and Scotland, with discussions held in London 1702-3. In addition to various political appointments, gained reputation as a skilful amateur architect. Moved to London 1707. Union negotiations had brought Mar in close contact with English court circle who advanced him at court. Sworn into Privy council (1707), appointed keeper of the signet (1708), representative peer of Scotland. Became seriously involved in Jacobite politics c.1714 and led 1715 rising in Scotland. Fled to Paris 1716. Died at Aix-la-Chapelle 1732.
