Matriculated at St Andrews University in 1593 and graduated MA in 1596. Presented to the vicarage of Torkington, near Stoneykirk on 8 June 1585. Translated to Ireland by Bishop Andrew Knox where Adair maintained a relatively steady career in the Church until the political turbulence of the Scottish national covenant. Regained favour was made bishop of Waterford and Lismore on 7 June 1641. Left Ireland after the Irish rebellion of 1641 for England. Died in Bristol, 1647.
